Plate 8 Rome: The Ara Paci s Augustae, begun in 13 BC and completed four years later. The reliefs of the enclosure walls of the altar make this monument a virtual record of the Augustan respublica. The upper scene on the right of the entrance shows Aeneas’ arrival in Italy, a central theme of Augustus’ ‘refoundation’ of Rome.

In general, therefore, and in detail, the Marble City emphasised the new beginning and the greatness of Rome’s place and mission in the world. It also, however, shows that the new start was effected not by riding roughshod over all of Rome’s past that was held in esteem and affection but by incorporating the past and thus demonstrating that the Pax Augusta and the restored Republic essentially represented the continuity of Rome’s past greatness, now enhanced by the opportunities provided by imperial Rome and by the auctoritas of the princeps.
